Neon Glass Sculpture
My sculptures are the result of my desire to discover the many
possibilities of neon glasswork. I enjoy experimenting with
different techniques by twisting, blowing, and manipulating
the glass in various ways. In my neon work, I have implemented
the use of a jewelers torch. This provides a single, pinpoint
flame, which allows me to blow a hole in the neon tube. I then
fill this hole with colored glass rod and blow it out into a
bubble. These glowing bubbles provide texture to
the neon tube.
I find the delicate nature of glass makes it an
exciting material to work with. I am forced to keep my attention
sharply focused on the glass in order to ensure a well-developed
piece. I enjoy the spontaneous creative process, working without
a pattern and relying on my minds eye, as I let the piece take
form. A neon tube is basically a line of light. I take this
line and bend it into an abstract form, creating a visual that
leaves the viewer open to experience their individual ideas
about what they see. Through the use color and movement, I imply
mood and invoke feeling.
