The Esther M. Klein Art Gallery is pleased to announce the fifth
exhibition in its Art & Community Exhibition Series. This
exhibition series features grass roots organizations that use
art and the creative process as a vehicle to enhance the lives
of individuals in the spirit of sustained community interaction.
Since 1996 Neighborhood Bike Works has used bikes as a positive
influence in the lives of Philadelphia youth by offering earn-a-bike
classes that teach bike maintenance, repair and safety. Classes
are offered after school, on weekends and throughout the summer.
By completing the classes and repairing used bikes donated by
the community, students can earn a bike for themselves. Graduates
of the basic bike program continue to participate in Neighborhood
Bike Works activities by attending advanced classes, helping
with community events and becoming youth assistants in the basic
classes.
"NBW is one of our most successful
after school programs and is a favorite of students, teachers
and myself... It is so successful because it combines strong
academics with the fun and excitement of hands-on learning that
motivates students, and provides opportunities to excel and
become leaders."
- Michelle McKinney, GEAR UP Managing Coordinator
The Esther M. Klein Art Gallery will sponsor Neighborhood Bike
Works' second annual fund-raising event through a juried exhibition
of Bike Part Art. An open call to artists and individuals will
include access to bike parts donated by Neighborhood Bike Works.
Participants of this initiative will be challenged to create
found object art pieces using bike parts. Celebrity jurors including
Stanley Tuttleman (Tuttleman Foundation, Tuttleman Omniverse
Theater at the Franklin Institute), Art Carey (Philadelphia
Inquirer) and Ruth Snyderman (The Works Gallery) will select
the best works from three categories. Prizes will be awarded
to individual artists. Art sales will benefit Neighborhood Bike
Works programming.
Artists will be judged based on the category they enter: professional
artists, amateur artists (including bike messengers, recreational
bikers, bike commuters) and NBW students.
To achieve its mission of building communities through art,
the Esther M. Klein Art Gallery will host many events in conjunction
with the exhibit, including the Klein Gallery's respected Art
Outreach Program, which will invite Philadelphia school classes
to make their own artwork out of used bike parts. Outreach Workshop
participants of all ages will be invited to visit the Neighborhood
Bike Works' workshop and participate in hands-on art workshops
led by artists and cyclists.
The exhibit will open on Wednesday, May 19th and art work will
be available for sale throughout the exhibit. A gala public
reception is scheduled for Saturday evening, June 5th - the
evening before the Wachovia Pro Cycling Championship race
held in Philadelphia. Wachovia will promote the exhibit and
reception as part of their promotions for the big race. The
exhibit will continue through the end of June.
