The Esther M. Klein Art Gallery is pleased to announce the
18th exhibition in its Art-in-Science Series. This series
is inspired by the Klein Gallery's affiliation with the Science
Center and offers exhibition opportunities to individuals
and organizations that explore the artistic and expressive
possibilities of technology
and science.
The Earth Exposed project integrates art, technology and Earth
science research around the imagery of Earth taken by astronauts
and satellites. This exhibit is a unique collaboration between
a research scientist, education developers, and an innovative
art gallery with a history of exhibiting cutting-edge art
and science exhibitions. It builds on a solid foundation in
geosciences research, Earth science education and artistic
expression.
For scientists, these images expose Earth's features and processes
as never before, revolutionizing our understanding
of Earth systems. These same images transcend science and
technology and enter a realm of visual and philosophical contemplation,
inspiring such emotions as awe and reverence
for Earth. Viewers will be guided through an exploration and
discovery of our planet as an interconnected whole provoking
questions technology, science and mankind's place in context
to earth and space exploration. A special component of the
exhibit will investigate visual and scientific phenomenon
specific to Philadelphia and the Tri-State area, using remote
satellite imaging models to show Philadelphia in context to
the rest of
the world.
The Earth Exposed project combines science and art to bolster
understanding of Earth system science among the public and
K-12 students. The Esther M. Klein Art Gallery and the TERC
Center for Earth and Space Science Education, partnered to
develop a cutting edge educational program as an artistic
entrée into learning about Earth system science. The
art educational workshops will include computer animations
and web-based resources (www.earthscienceart.org),
as well as hands-on science and art learning activities on
remote-sensing and Earth science concepts depicted in the
Earth Exposed Exhibit.
For years, the Esther M. Klein Art Gallery has been a leading
exponent of art appreciation and education in the Philadelphia
Public School system, reaching out with proactive programming
to the most underserved communities. As a component of the
Esther M. Klein Art Gallery's Art Outreach Program, all workshops
accompanying the Earth Exposed exhibit will be offered to
public school's free of charge and include
round-trip bus transportation.
The Center for Earth and Space Science Education is a branch
of the Technical Education Resource Center (TERC) located
in Cambridge, Massachusetts. TERC, an educational non-profit,
has lead the development of supportive computer-based educational
activities for the Earth Exposed exhibit. Over the
past several years, TERC has specialized in Earth and space
science education, with a special focus on Earth visualizations
and the space-age perspective.
This is a seed project funded by a generous grant from the
National Science Foundation (NSF) to explore linking art and
Earth science education. The Esther M. Klein Art Gallery is
very pleased to offer this ambitious pilot project, with the
potential
to open new ways for integrating education in science and
art.
The work builds on years of research and experience with the
use of images in Earth science education.
The EARTH EXPOSED exhibit is scheduled in conjunction with
the 100th Anniversary Meeting of the Association of American
Geographers (Philadelphia Convention Center, March 2004)
