The Esther M. Klein Art Gallery is pleased to present Teatro Anatomico, an installation by artist Cristin Millett that was created during a three-month residency at Sculpture Space in Utica, NY and was funded in part by a College of Arts & Architecture Faculty Research Grant form the Pennsylvania State University.

Focused on our eternal fascination with the human reproductive system and changing perceptions of female anatomy, artist Cristin Millett creates objects and installations that examine the shifting theories of the female body. Teatro Anatomico represents an intersection of scientific ideas and contemporary aesthetic perception, giving insight into societal attitude about the female body.

The fascination with the human reproductive system led the artist to investigate the context in where anatomy is studied. This installation is the outcome of the artist’s research on anatomy theatres in Italy, England, and the United States. The installation explores the metaphorical relationship between the interior and the exterior spaces of architecture and of the body.

Cristin Millett holds an MFA from Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ and a BFA from Kent State University in Kent, OH. Recent one and two persons exhibit include Buckham Gallery, Flint, MI; Hartnett Gallery, University of Rochester, NY; Giles Gallery, Eastern Kentucky University, KY; and The Center for Maine Contemporary Art, Rockport, ME.
